I found this beer during "Golden Week" in Japan. I met up with my friends for dinner and, walking around; we found this place called American Antenna, which sells beers from around the world, so naturally, I picked one up to review. I was tired of trying a lot of IPA, so this time, I decided to grab a sour to try. Without further ado, this week I am reviewing Strawberry Lemonade Sparkler by Lone Pine.
When I look at this beer, it reminds me of non-cloudy apple juice. Like the ones that you get from the supermarket. It’s a lighter colour than your normal beer except maybe a pale ale or a blond ale. It is also very transparent, and you can see quite clearly through the beer and glass. When it comes to carbonation, there is not much to say. It’s there, and it’s about the normal amount of carbonation.
I don’t even need to give you a first smell impression because I got hit with it when I first started to pour the beer. It is a very strong smell of citrus and mainly sweet strawberry. When I took my first sniff the smell did not change it just intensified the original smell. When I took my first sip, it was very sour (surprise the sour beer was sour). Apart from the sour flavour which is the main flavour profile, there is also some tartness that comes through. Here the strawberry does take a backseat as the lemon flavour takes a more prominent stance. While drinking the beer, it did make my whole mouth salivate. Also, the sour taste does slightly linger at the back of my throat.
This is a very nice beer if you are into sour-flavoured things. This is probably one of the more sour, sour beers that I have tried in my life and I like it. To me, this is a refreshing beer that is made for summer rather than winter. If it was not so expensive to buy it in Japan. I might have bought one more. Maybe I will in the future.
